長谷寺（浜の観音）春の観音大祭

「浜の観音さん」で知られる沼津市千本浜公園の長谷寺の「春の観音大祭」では、駿河湾内を航行する漁船などが目安にしたとされる幅13ｍ、長さ30ｍの百三十反観音大曼陀羅（まんだら）の開帳が行われ、観音様への祈念をします。この曼陀羅は、その昔航海の難所熊野灘、遠州灘などの航海安全を念願して、船主はその無事帰還のお礼にと、船の命の綱と頼む帆に霊像を写して奉納したことに始まったと伝えられています。

At the “Spring Kannon Festival”, people pray for Kannon, one of the Buddhist deities said to have been a guide for the fishing boats which use the nearby Suruga bay. For many years, prayers have been made for the safe return of ships through two of the most perilous areas within the North Pacific ocean.

In Senbonhama park, a 13x30m statue of Kannon stands to help guide the fishing boats. It is said that many years ago, a ship owner dedicated the statue to be the “thread” to ensure the ships could find their safe return back home.
